Temperance Club review of: American Malt by Lyre's
Lyre's non-alcoholic spirit range is created to taste, look and feel just like their alcoholic counterparts. With 14 different products, there's plenty of choices and lots of unique drinks, Absinthe, Coffee Originale and American Malt which will be our first Lyre's review. Created to capture the essence of a gently mellowed American Classic Bourbon Malt, American Malt vows to deliver a premium zero ABV bourbon-drinking experience.
Flavour review: Mellow with hints of vanilla and spice
Packaged in a big round bottle with a gun-wielding Brown bear graphics, Lyre's American Malt strikes a clear connection to American Bourbons. It has a tawny brown colour and a welcoming aroma of vanilla and toasted grains. As is a Temperance Club norm, we first tested American Malt straight. Here it has a clear bourbon evoking flavour, slightly oaky, with subtle vanilla and cinnamon/clove spices and a dash of herbal notes. The mouthfeel is well-bodied with a light syrupy finish too. Mixed with a 1:3 ratio with a cola, American Malt delivers a very, very close imitation of a full alcoholic bourbon and coke, however, just so slightly lacking some of the "punch" you would get from an alcoholic bourbon. As we're not massive cola fans, we followed Lyre's recipe for their Old fashioned. A Temperance Club tip here, go for 70ml of American Malt instead of 60ml. This created a well-balanced zero alcohol drink, smooth on the palate and thoroughly enjoyable.
Value for money: Yes
As of November 2020, this was priced at £23.50 for a massive 70cl bottle. Considering you could get 20 or so servings from this bottle, this represents great value for a premium product.
Comparison: American Bourbon
Lyre's are unmistakable in clearly aligning their spirits to their full alcoholic counterparts. American Malt delivers the sugar, woody and vanilla flavour that we would expect from a non-alcoholic bourbon alternative.
Perfect for: An Old Fashioned
Go for 70ml of American Malt, some aromatic bitters, a touch of honey, citrus peel and ice for a new non-alcoholic spirit drinking experience.
Our opinion: Best for Bourbon & Whiskey Drinkers
With all the characteristics, American Malt is a strong choice for Bourbon & Whiskey fans.
