We review Adnams Southwold's 0.5% abv version of Ghost Ship.
Adnams Southwold is steeped in history, formed in 1872, they've been producing cask ale and bottled beers for close to 150 years. Ghost Ship 0.5% ABV is derived from their popular, full alcohol beer, Ghost Ship 4.5% ABV. Using the reverse osmosis method to remove alcohol, this 0.5% ABV pale ale promises the same original flavours and the renowned citrus kick, but with most of the alcohol removed.
Flavour review: Refreshing, sweet and crisp
Pouring with an amber tint and light head, Ghost Ship 0.5% pours like a traditional golden ale. The aroma delivers a citrus punch as promised, grapefruit and lemon join up with a tropical sweetness of mango and pineapple to create a tantalising aroma. Containing the popular Citra hops, the aromas transfer into the taste. However, Ghost Ship 0.5% has enough bitterness and roasted malt flavour to remind you that you're drinking a well-balanced IPA, the medium to dry finish helps with this too. The variety and balance in flavour make this a great IPA to enjoy, bitter, hoppy and fruity, we feel that this could be a real crowd-pleaser.
Value for money: Yes
As of April 2021, 8x 500ml bottles can be brought on the Adnams website for £12.99. At around £1.60 for a 500ml bottle, this represents superb value.
Comparison: Ghost Ship 4.5% ABV
It has been a considerable time since we last enjoyed the full alcohol version of Ghost Ship, but the memories of balanced bitter and citrus flavours were once again evoked in this drink.
Perfect for: A blind taste test
Given that this drink is brewed almost identically to its full alcohol counterpart, comparing the two side by side would be great for those who drink both drinks above 0.5% ABV.
Our opinion: Another great IPA
IPA's seem to be dominating the no-low beer market, with some very strong options from all types of breweries. Ghost Ship joins the list of some of our favourite no-low IPA's.
